Introduction

Voting Center 3.0 is an easy to use polling program that allows you to create and manage multiple polls easily.

Installation

Installation instructions for Unix and Win32 servers using a FTP program. Windows users should ignore anything that refers to changing permissions.

  1. Unzip the Voting Center zip file into a temperary directory and make sure that you perserve the directory structure. If you are using winzip, it should do that automatically. (If you are reading this, you probably have already done this)
  2. Open all the files located inside the cgi directory and make sure that the first line of each of the files points to the correct path to your Perl interpreter. On most web servers the default setting will work perfectly.
  3. Open your favorite FTP program and upload all the files that are located inside the cgi directory into your cgi-bin directory or any directory that allows you to run CGI scripts on your web server. If you would like, you can create a separate directory within your cgi-bin directory for Voting Center.
  4. Change the permissions on all the files that you just uploaded to 755 (Read & Execute to all, Write to Owner). In most FTP programs, you can change the permissions on the files by right clicking on the files. You should then choose the option CHMOD or Change Permissions. Windows users should skip this step.
  5. Upload the config.cgi file that is located in the configuration directory into the same directory as where you uploaded the other files from step 3.
  6. Change the permissions on the config.cgi file to 777 (Read, Write & Execute to all). Windows users should skip this step.
  7. Open your favorite web browser and run the install.cgi by typing in the URL to the file on your web server in the location bar. Do not close your FTP program yet - we will need to use it after you run the install.cgi. Follow the directions given in the install.cgi

Trouble Shooting

I get an internal server error or an invalid http header error when I run the install.cgi
This usually means that the first line of your CGI scripts is not pointing to the correct path of your Perl interpreter. Make sure that the first line of each of the .cgi files is the correct path to your Perl interpreter. This error may also occur if your server is not setup properly to run CGI scripts.
